词源：种加词'niger'意为黑色，但实际体色多变。Spix在帕林廷斯采集模式标本；拉丁名'planata'指略扁平的背甲。加拉帕戈斯象龟是达尔文进化论的重要灵感来源之一。
形态特征
最大背甲长（SCL）雄性135.8 cm，雌性122.0 cm；最大弯甲长（CCL）雄性199.7 cm，雌性197.2 cm；95百分位数CCL雄性151.0 cm，雌性118.0 cm。
生态习性
栖息于加拉帕戈斯群岛的干燥低地至潮湿高地，以草、灌木、仙人掌、果实等为食。昼行性，雨季活动频繁，旱季可进入休眠。寿命可超过100年。繁殖期集中在雨季，雌龟每年产卵1-2窝，每窝2-25枚卵，孵化期约4-8个月。
主要威胁与保护
历史威胁包括人类捕杀（作为食物和油料）、栖息地破坏、外来物种（鼠、猫、狗、山羊、猪）对卵和幼龟的捕食及植被破坏。保护措施：20世纪中期启动圈养繁殖和岛屿恢复工程，成功重建种群（如Española岛）。当前仍需持续控制外来物种、保护栖息地、防止偷猎。
