Trivia
The species was originally described as Platemys novaeguineae by Meyer in 1874. The type locality was restricted to Passim, Barbussi River, West Papua. It has also been placed in the subgenus Hanwarachelys (Thomson et al. 2015). The common name 'New Guinea snapping turtle' reflects its defensive behavior.
Overview
Elseya novaeguineae, commonly known as the western New Guinea stream turtle or New Guinea snapping turtle, is a freshwater turtle in the family Chelidae native to New Guinea and introduced to Palau.
Scientific Name
Elseya novaeguineae
Ecological Habits
It inhabits smaller streams and rivers, preferring slow-moving water with soft substrates. The diet is omnivorous, including aquatic insects, crustaceans, and plant matter.
Major Threats & Conservation
Although listed as Least Concern, habitat loss and degradation in New Guinea, as well as potential competition with introduced species in Palau, may require monitoring. The introduced population in Palau could have ecological impacts.
Morphological Characteristics
Maximum SCL is 19.1 cm for males and 22.9 cm for females (A.G.J. Rhodin, unpubl. data). The shell is typically brownish with a relatively flat carapace and a moderately developed plastron.
Natural Distribution & Conservation Status
The indigenous range includes West Papua, Indonesia, with an estimated AOO of 66,950 sq. km and EOO of 153,447 sq. km. It has been introduced to Babeldaob, Palau (Aoki 1977). The IUCN Red List classifies it as Least Concern (LC) (ATTWG 2000), and the TFTSG Provisional Red List also lists it as LC (2015).
